Tomato and mozzarella salad is a traditional Italian dish that originated on the island of Capri. Although created in Italy, it is said to have been popularized and invented in honor of King Farouk of Egypt.
During his exile on the island in 1952, this king, forced into exile after a military coup, asked the chef of the Hotel Gatto Bianco to prepare a fresh dish for him.
The chef improvised using local ingredients, thus creating the famous Caprese salad. This salad, composed of sliced tomatoes, mozzarella, basil leaves, salt, and olive oil, is now known worldwide.
